My brother and I earned…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 17, 2002 by Streetplay DiscussionsFebruary 16, 2019

My brother and I earned our Skelly stripes in the Redhook Projects, Brooklyn, NY (1970’s). Anyone out there from Redhook that remembers Mrs. Bernice Hawkins (My Grandmother)….she’s solely responsible for my Skelly career. Her motto…”If you’re going outside, then Stay outside…no In’s and Out’s”. So, needless to say, we stayed outside all day, playing Skelly. My “top” of choice was that white metal top that came off juice bottles. My brother and I would go find all the candles in my grandmother’s house and melt wax into the top, with a penny in the middle of it for extra weight. If we ran out, we would go to the spanish store on the corner and get a candle for a nickel. I’m a father of three kids now, and I’m definitely going to teach them all about Skelly. Actually, I live in Maryland now, so it will be new to most kids and adults alike. I’m glad that I stumbled onto this site!

My sister was three years…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 16, 2002 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

My sister was three years older than me. Although I was a good athlete, she was a great athlete and used to beat me in everything. While she would hang out with her friends, she would occasionally play in the neighborhood nightly stickball games, which were fungo style. I can’t remember her playing and not hitting at least one home run. On the night I hit my first home run and put my team up be about eight or nine runs, she led her team to a lop-sided victory, hitting four in a row in the bottom of the inning. As much as we always tried to get the best of each other, and as much as I hated to see her do well, I was disappointed when we ended the game because of darkness. She was up next and based on the zone she was in (and the fact that it was getting hard to see the ball) I was sure that she was going to hit her fifth home run of the inning. After her second home run, the outfielders were playing her pretty deep. Yet, she still hit the ball so far that the oufielders couldn’t stop her.

I had forgotten all about this one, until I read the message on Buck Buck. I remember watching my brothers and the other boys on the street playing it. How I loved growing up in Philly! We lived in the Richmond Section.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 14, 2002 by Streetplay DiscussionsMay 9, 2019

In the summer the only means of cooling off was putting on the fire plug. One of our neighbors had a wrench that would open it and every time the police would come and turn it off, in a matter of minutes it was on again.

Hi, I grew up on Long Island, and I can still smell that new ball smell of the Pinkie. Spaldeens just didn’t smell as good. If anyone still wants to find any pinkies, (the spaldeens are now at Sports Authority, and Modells) I would suggest cruising the old neighborhoods and look for older run-down homes. Then ask permission and check those gutters!!

If you’re from Philly , you have to remember Camp Wm. Penn in E. Stroudesburg , sponsored by the Phila. Dept. Of Recreation — 2 weeks in the Poconos for Two dollars !! WHAT A GREAT EXPERIENCE IT WAS FOR KIDS !
