In Earby, near Colne in Lancashire on May day as late as 1942 groups of girls and boys went round the houses rather like ‘trick or treat’. The girls had a broom stick with a barrel hoop fixed to the top with ribbons hanging down to make a May pole round which they danced and the boys had one of their number tied in a sack. The boy in the sack danced to imitate a dancing bear and his mates poked him with a stick shouting ‘addyonconkay’. Has anyone else come across this custom?

Spaldeens were the best. Had more zing, didn’t split as easily, and were cheaper. It was a sad day when Irv’s candy store started selling Pensy Pinkies in place of good ‘ol reliable Spaldeens. Sacrilege. Hit a Pensy a good whack and ooop’s, we have two halves. Just don’t roof it. I don’t feel like climbing.

Hi, victoria again. Did any of you play roller derby in the street? We used to draw a circle with chalk in the street – then race around the “track” with our skates. We would push each other out of the way and follow our interpretation of the rules we saw on TV. Due to a number of skinned knees and chipped teeth, our mothers put an end to this game.
