Hey Bob. Saw your message…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 25, 2008 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

Hey Bob. Saw your message about playing stickball with fading fuzz tennis balls prior to WWII. I’m a 30’s guy who played in the streets of Jersey City and scattered with the rest when the “Mickey Mouse” popped in. Great times, guys and memories there.I just found this site as I’ve been trying to find a place out here that sells those balls we used so I can infect some grandkids with those old street/school yard games. My recollection is that we used a pinkish ball which I then understood to be manufactured by the companies that manufactured tennis balls. What they purportedly did was stop the process before putting the fuzz on to make our ball. At least that’s what my understanding was. They stopped making them, I was told, in the fifties. I’ve not been able to find anything in the San Diego area yet that is described as a Pensie Pinky or Spaldeen to compare it with what I knew as THE BALL.

Another version of the “o’lary”…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 12, 2008 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

Another version of the “o’lary” or O’Leary rhyme– One,two, three o”lary My first name is Mary If you think it’s necessary Look it up in the dictionary. We would sing this while bouncing an Indian rubber ball, and we would lift our leg over the ball at the end of each line–ie—o’lary, then Mary etc. When we were going to play tag, or hide and go seek we used to put our “dibs” up–(both hands made into fists) and one person would go around the circle and hit each person’s fist with hers, while we all sang “the song”. This was to determine who was “it” at the start of the tag, or hiding-go seek game. One such song was—“My mother gave your mother a punch in the nose. What colour was the blood? The person who’s fist was last hit—on the word blood–would call out a colour–ie-yellow-and the first person would spell the colour out-hitting each fist as she spelled it. When the final letter was said–ie-‘W”-the song would finish—as—“and you are IT. Funny song for kids to sing eh?? Did anyone ever do this type of song. We had quite a few different ones actually. I grew up in Ottawa, Canada–long time ago.

A boy from Ridgewood – grew up there in the 50’s Yes, Pensie Pinkies did exist and they did have the Keystone State logo on them. I was wondering. There is a company in Carlisle PA that makes tires. I wonder if this is the same company that could have made the Pinkies?

I grew up in Chicago and I remember that we always played Double Dutch and Chinese Jumprope with rhyming songs. I wish I remembered all of them because we would finish one rhyme and go right into singig another one as long as the jumper hadn’t missed yet. There had to be at lease 7 or 8 rhymes that we knew by heart. With Chinese Jumprope we would sing: Jump in jump out jump side to side jump on jump in jump out.

I just finished telling a story about the game to my goddaugter and her cousin. They had a hopscotch board drawn on the driveway. I tried a search for this game many years ago but no luck because I wasn’t sure about the real name. I got lucky today by searching for street games. I thought we used to call it scalesies or loadies. It was painted in most of the project parks. I played all over TAFT, and Foster projects when I was a kid. I lived right in 1694 Madison Ave. I used to go to different bodegas just to find multi-colored poker chips to make caps. I used bubble gum after chewing out all of the sugar. My nickname was Howslinger

I’m a gal who was born & raised in B’klyn.(1953)& lived entirely in Brownsville, ENY for my entire life. You name the street game, I played it, & if it involved a ball, it was a SPAULDING,,(aka as we called it “SPAUL-DEEN”..) & I cant eva recall a “Pensie Pinkie.” There was several balls we called “Flat Balls”..but (maybe pensie pinkies..??) but were quickly replaced if somebody came in with a “Spauldeen”,cause they just didnt have the bounce. Long Live BK, BROWNSVILLE, B.R.C, BETSY HEAD, were we played like no tomorrow.
