hello, I’m willie blas from the san diego stickball league. We have adopted the bronx style stickball rules with modifications for our fields.Like steve above, I agree that it’s the only way to play stickball.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on December 1, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsDecember 1, 1999

> How do the center numbers work. Are they for going backwards or what. The numbers in the trapezoids surrounding the “13” box are the “number of boxes bonus” someone gets for hitting the player out who is stuck in that box. So let’s say I’m going for 4 forwards and I hit someone out of the “6” trapezoid, I would then get to stick my cap in the “9” box and go for “10 forward” (I _was_ going for “4”, now I’m going for “10”). > the moderator of the forum (“Masta Blasta”) would frown at such a basic approach This is correct, I frown on this approach of simply losing turns if you get stuck in the skull. It’s called a skull because you’re dead when you’re in it, not simply stunned! Of course, you’re welcome to use the simpler approaches as long as all agree to the rules beforehand. I think there’s more excitement to the “bonus” thing than the “lose turns” approach. Try ’em both, decide for yourself.

I make stickball bats.We play the Bronx style stickball game. The ball we use is the sky bounce,it replaced the spaldeen.Anyway,I’m the batman.I make them out of rake handles, shovels, hoe’s or whatever has a decent handle.I shave them down with a block plane to a tapered shape. If your interested leave me a message.

Slug aka Chinese Handball – does anybody remember playing “Slug”? That was the name we used in the Bronx in the early ’50’s. In Queens it was known as Chinese Handball or Ace-King-Queen.

yes, yes, yes….it is a sliding pond. Not just in East Flatbush but in south central Queens. Now I live up in Mass. and they think I’m nuts when I use the term. Check out the book “New Yawk Tawk”. The author says that sliding pond is only used in NYC and may come from the Dutch Bahnn which means TRACK….sliding track.

Do you guys remember bottle…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on November 27, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 27, 1999

Do you guys remember bottle cap baseball? There was even a TV show (I think Sat. mornings) where they would have guys like Joe Black, Gil Hodges, & Don Newcombe playin’ it. One guy would have a set of soda caps like coke and the other guy would have caps like white rock or rhiengold. The batter would shoot his cap onto the field and the defense would shoot his cap with his thumb to hit the batters cap for an out. Do you remember the Roger Maris hitting tube? It layed on the ground & had a plastic ball in the end of it. You would stomp on the end of the flat tube and the ball would shoot up into the air and you would hit it. They had one for Mays too. I wish I still had it for my kids. Who else remembers playin in the streets with a real hardball? The cover was gone in no-time but you would wrap it with friction tape. The kids wouldn’t pitch in to buy a new ball but we would save up to buy a new roll of tape. You could go a long way with a roll of friction tape…OK last but not least, where can I find a Top. Micknpez said he scored some but where from? For the last couple of years I’ve been lookin’ but can’t find ’em. I would love to show my kids how to play. Eat hard, Sleep hard, and Grow Big…For we are the last of the Full Grown Men!
