Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on December 19, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsDecember 19, 1999

I used to pretend that I was someone else to my kid sister (9 years younger than me). I used to go into the bathroom and tell her that he (can’t remember the name) would come in through the window and I would go out (without her seeing of course). I used to slick my hair back and talk funny. She used to believe me (she was very young!). I’d talk to her for a while then leave. I would then come out of the bathroom as myself. Pretty weird, huh? She still gets a kick out of it now when we talk of it (I’m 40 now!).

Actually I’m a guy and I used to do a lot of that when I was a kid. Usually by myself or with a cousin or friend. I’d set up a store, or a TV game show, or even pretend I was a Beatle in front of a full length mirror with a Beatle wig. I also remember pretend doing the Soupy Sales Show. Of course this was in the early ’60s, I’m 40 now!

During the 70’s, I spent my summers at the Pancrest Lodge bungalow colony. Pancrest was nestled in the woods of South Fallsberg. It had a camphouse, ballfield and casino. The casino was the nerve center of the colony, it also served as headquarters for the “color wars” strategy sessions. The owner’s daughter ran the casino for a while. On weekends, my folks came up and we’d have breakfast at Poppins. There was a steep and narrow road that led you to and from the colony. I remember my last trip down that road, it seems like a lifetime ago.

What did you use when you didn’t have a ball to throw? Rolled up news papers, tied with a string. A half dead basket ball.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on December 17, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

Spaldeens were used for Stoop,Stick and Wall Ball. In the area known as Red Hook south Brooklyn. There was a street game that most called “punch ball” We chose to call it fist ball, since you didn’t hit it with a punch but rather your closed fist or in some instances an open hand, to slap it or slice it. The ball was hit with the exposed flat joints and heel of the hand The prefered ball for this was known as a “Pimple ball”, it was white and a little softer than a Spaldeen. The ball had dots in between lines that ran around the ball. Some had a star at the top and bottom of the ball. There was no room on our block to play stick ball, with cars parked on either side and there were only a few stores in the area that sold it. One was Scamadellas, on Court and Baltic Streets. 15 cents each.

Chuck – You’re getting Ricki Ticki Tavi mixed up with Ricki Ticki Tembo. Ricki Ticki Tavi is the mongoose, Ricki Ticki Tembo is the Chinese boy who fell down the well. The book (Ricki Ticki Tembo)is still in print by the way. I’m re-living my childhood with my little boy.

Lisa, thanks! That was one of my favorites. Brain’s a little rusty, but I’m going to give it a shot: Going to Kentucky, going to the fair, I met a senorita with flowers in her hair, Oh, shake it baby, shake it; shake it if you can Shake it like a milk shake, then do it once again Oh, rumba to the bottom; rumba to the top Turn around and turn around until you make a STOP! There you go. That was fun.
