One of the many joys of…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 18, 2003 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 13, 2014

One of the many joys of life back in the 50,s was to hang out on the street corner and sing Doo Wop. While living in East New York Brooklyn I would sing till my throat was sore.We would sing when we got up till we went to bed at night. In the subways or hallways were always the choosen place to capture, THE ECHO. From the streets of Brooklyn to the Boardwalk @ Rockaway Beach the air was filled with harmony coming from groups like,The Bob Knight Four,The Star Fires,The BelAirs,The Capris, The Admirations,The Chalets,The Five Discs and many many more. From dances @ St. Michaels to St. Fortunata,s,from the candy stores that line the streets ,to many a pizza place, groups could be heard telling their story with the human voice. From the driving beat of the Bass singer to the high tenor float of the Falsesetto to the SHO DOP DOBBIE DOO of the Background singers to that crystal clear voice of the Lead singer,Doo Wop was king. Found memories of a time when things were easy. I Remember In The Still Of The Night, fond thoughts to all, Frank Iovino presently still singing Doo Wop in Florida with my present group called,WHAT ELSE,The Five Boroughs. It really gets me thinking,…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 18, 2003 by Streetplay DiscussionsJuly 18, 2003

It really gets me thinking, that so many of you had kisses before I was even born – for me, a couple of those stories are about times that never really existed. The 1950’s? I wasn’t born until 1986! And my first kiss wasn’t more than 40 years ago – it was a whole 40 DAYS ago. It was fairly late in the evening, and we had got away from the crowd by going outside. For probably half an hour we held each other while sitting down, then we stood up and at the same time we edged our faces closer together and our lips touched in the sweetest moment I can recall in my whole SIXTEEN years of life. So beat that for a more recent experience of a first kiss!

The one I remember best…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 17, 2003 by Streetplay DiscussionsMarch 15, 2019

The one I remember best was a clapping sort-of patty cake rhyme with two completely unrelated verses. But we always did both, the second one right after the first. The clapping was done sitting across from your best friend. The clapping steps were: 1) Clap your shoulders with your arms crossed. 2) Clap the top of your thighs 3) Clap your hands together 4) Clap your right hand across to your friends right hand. 5) Clap your hands together. 6) Clap your left hand across to your friends left hand. 7) Clap your hands together. 8) Clap both your right to your friends left and your left to her right together. Repeat over and over. One clap per syllable to the following verses: My mother told me if I was goody That she would buy me a rubber dolly My auntie told her I kissed a soldier Now she won’t buy me a rubber dolly. Three Six Nine The goose drank wine The monkey spit tobacco on the street car line The line broke The monkey got choked And they all went to heaven in a little rowboat. Clap-clap.

Hello to ALL- God This…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 17, 2003 by Streetplay DiscussionsFebruary 16, 2019

Hello to ALL- God This is a great website! I can remember playing Skelly in my great childhood days in the Bayview Projects in Brooklyn. Rainbow Clay from StarValue, pennies in the middle of Sunnydale milk caps, “kicksies” and those cheap little Ballantine Ale caps with the wax melted in. These are all fond memories of a game I will teach my kids to play, as well as other greats like Ring-a-Leevio, Building Tag, Poison Ball and Off the Wall…

I used to like a clapping rhyme, but I can’t remember how it goes. Some of the words I remember are; Fire cracker Fire Cracker Boom Boom Boom Fire Cracker Fire cracker Boom Booom Boom and a part that goes Girls do the curtsey Boys do the bow The boys go *whistle* the girls go *scream* I would appreciate it as I work with children and they often ask me what the words are. (please reply by email)
