Lenny Milhazes, do you remember…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 24, 2003 by Streetplay DiscussionsFebruary 16, 2019

Lenny Milhazes, do you remember Andy’s candy store that was on Pioneer St. in Red Hook? My brother-in-laws family owned it. They lived in a house on Richard’s St. right next to Visitation Church’s Convent. Do you remember the Public Library that was there before they built the Convent. I lived in the Red Hook Projects on Centre Mall. It was great growing up in Red Hook and I never forgot all the good times I had there.

I’m back again. I can’t…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 24, 2003 by Streetplay DiscussionsMay 9, 2019

I’m back again. I can’t seem to stay away from this site. The one place that comes to mind when I think of the Lower East Side is Mott Street. Little Italy to most of you. We had a large group of kids that hung around together. At most we were around 15 boys and girls who ‘stayed together’. In the summer months we could be found at the corner of Mott and Broome Streets. Just hanging out on the front stoop. That’s what we called it. Just hanging around. We sat around and talked and there was always singing and dancing to someone’s radio. This was way before hand held recorders for tapes. CD’s weren’t even invented yet. (Gee, how old am I?) On Sunday we attended church and then later on took in a movie. Always a group of us went. Maybe a local movie house (Delancy or Canal Theaters) or if there was something good happening uptown – either at Radio City Music Hall or any of the other big theaters. Does anyone remember ‘The Dumps’. Also known as the Universal Theater. It was a little movie house at the corner of the Bowery and Hester Street. In the later years, it always smelled like the inside of a liquor bottle. That’s where the homeless (to be politically correct) hung out and kept warm. But I remember it when we could spend an entire Saturday there for 15 cents. We would get 20 cartoons and two full length features. Plus the Newsreel. My father would drop me off in the morning with a friend or two and then pick us up in the late afternoon. Can you imagine we were entertained for several hours for 15 cents! Try and get this now. Well, I think I’ve rambled on and on for long enough. It would be soo nice to see some replies on my posting. If you remember some of these places, maybe you were one of those kids. Take care…Jeanne from Forsythe Street

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 23, 2003 by Streetplay DiscussionsJuly 23, 2003

Wow! I just tried last night to teach my grandkids the one, two three o’leary game and couldn’t remember it. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you who left messages about this game. I played it in the early 50’s and we used either a tennis ball or a rubber ball the size of a tennis ball. I couldn’t remember all of it but some of your messages have brought it all back to me. thanks.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 21, 2003 by Streetplay DiscussionsJuly 21, 2003

As 58 year old former player of Ace-King, I’m wondering if any out there can help jog my memory. There were rules calls at the beginning of every game – “No babying, no stealing, no carrying, etc.” There were also calls made during the game – some obvious, like “do-over” some not, like “fluke, or Hindu.” Anyone remmebr these and their meaning? I know some had to do with whether the ball struck an edge of the brick causing a “funny” bounce. Mike G

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 21, 2003 by Streetplay DiscussionsJuly 21, 2003

Remember the kids who would trash a game just because they were losing? Or those who would change the game rules to accommodate their personal needs? Who was the cheater in your crew? Was it a kid in the bunch or a sibling? Bring them out! My brother was the biggest cheat. Teaching me how to play chess, he always cheated in his own favor. Then he’d beat me up when I accused him of being a cheating loser. He’s nicer now, but back then he was the play mate from hell. And don’t forget the kids who would snatch there toys or games back because they were losing.

Late-bloomer, Bro My kid got frenched by a 6 yr old when he was only 5. Guess it was his irresistible curly hair. He met his first fatal attraction diva at 7. I’m fearing his teens

We usually played this game…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 21, 2003 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

We usually played this game on a dead end street in the south Bronx. They’d be five or more players who would line up on the sidewalk of one side of the street. The person chosen to be a responder would take position on the opposite sidewalk. In unison the group would call out, What’s in the Icebox” and the responder would say an item, after some drawn out elaboration, that would either be something found in an icebox or not. If the item was something in the icebox like, “A delicious bottle of, Milk!” everyone would run and the first one to tag the responder was the next one to be up. The real catch to this game was if the responder said something like, “A big juicy shoe!” In this case, whoever took a step forward to run would be out and usually more than one person was out.
