Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on March 1, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

yo! man i miss the old stickball days…….i grew up playing on myrtle ave in jersey city, nj during the 70’s…..i was never any good at basketball but put a stick in my hand and i was quite a hitter (or so i thought)……so many memories i can recall….breaking windows, ladies yelling out the window for us kids to take the game down the street b4 we break a window……having water thrown on us, still wish i knew who did that, nearly getting hit by cars…..those were good days ………….i still got a stick in my closet for old times sake…….we played the game with the spaldeen pitched underhand and you had to hit it on the first bounce……never reached the 2 sewer level (still got skinny arms) most of my shots were inside the park jobs…….my longest shot i can recall got caught on the fly by this kid named cowboy…..knew him for yrs and don’t think i ever knew his real name…..he was always cowboy to us…….once in a while i’d get “lucky” and spot a spaldeen in a sewer….i didn’t mind the sludge and the stench getting on me if i could get at the spaldeen floating down there……it was worth it…..why go buy one when you could get one in a sewer or climb onto a roof and retrieve someone else’s? finder’s keepers

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on March 1, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsMarch 1, 2004

Well, technically I guess my first kiss was in Sunday School when Jordan (who I wanted to marry at the time)looked at me and told me to kiss the peice of construction paper he was holding in front of his face. Somehow, in my four year old mind, what he was saying didn’t click, so I kissed the paper while he kissed the other side. I couldn’t talk for about a half hour after that, and I know my face went beet red. As for my REAL first kiss, I’m saving that for my one and only, no matter how crazy everyone else thinks that is.

How about: Dum dum doh doh, catch me if you can. i can run faster than “so-and-so” can. The person named had to chase you, jumping once and circling around until someone missed the rope or the caller got caught. Played this in Detroit in the late 50’s, early 60’s

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 26, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

I grew up in Jersey City in the 70’s and we played this game called Caps(Skully) it was fun and I ruined many gallons of milk by stealing the tops of the containers. I also ruined a lot of pairs of sneakers dragging my feet across the board. We used play dough or melted wax with a penny in the middle to add extra weight. Also i dont remember all the rules you have listed here so I beleive we played a modified version sure brings back memories

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 24, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsFebruary 24, 2004

In the 1,2,3, O’Leary game the first time through we just bounced the ball. The second time through we said “Carnation” instead of “O’Leary” and we crossed one foot over the other as we said “Carnation”. Then we went on to the leg over the ball saying “O’Leary”. We crossed our legs over from the outside in and from the inside out with right and left. We twirled on “O’Leary” somewhere in the game and clapped also.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 22, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

How wonderful that these games are coming back. I played “A my name is Alice. My husband’s name is Al. We come from Alabama and our product is Ajax.” Also played 1,2,3, O’Leary but in the early 50’s in Washington state, I thought it was “1,2,3, Alarry”. We played “7- Up” with a ball against the wall also. In both these last two ball games there were steps of increasing difficulty. In my memory I think I am getting O’Leary and 7-Up confused. Any hints?

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 21, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsFebruary 21, 2004

My first kiss was just yesterday. I am now 12 in grade 7 and just yesterday, we had a school dance. It was for 6 hours with only grade 7 and 8s. I was a really goodie goodie girl like last year, but then I just changed alot. Then this hot blonde had a crush on me and he announced it to almost everyone. Well I kind of like him too, and I’m like the “open” kind. Yesterday during slow dance, we didn’t dance because I don’t do slow dances, but I just asked him “Do you like me” and he just quickly said yes. At that moment I grabbed him and frenched him, while all these teachers and other friends were watching.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 20, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

I just spent about a half hour last night explaining the game Skully, that I played as a kid in Brooklyn (1965 Canarsie)to my wife and kids. Could not believe it when I found this website. I’m gonna spend some time this weekend making a few caps. Don’t know if the rest of the family will play but I sure am going to. Thanks!

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 19, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

I noticed that in many of the posts here referring to “Buck-Buck”, the player that stood against the wall was called the “pillar”. I’m an old south brooklyn boy and I played buck-buck regularly as a kid and we called the guy against the wall the “pillow” for what I thought was an obvious reason. If that guy wasn’t standing there it would have been murder for the first guy bent over when the other team jumped on their back. The force would push his head against the wall darn near breaking his neck. With a “pillow” there, he softened the crunch and there was less chance of getting hurt. That being said….”anyone wanna choose up sides and play?”
